This is the new Ford Capri - Is it really a Capri?

Now, i know what your thinking, This isn't a Capri, Its not a coupe with a V6 engine in it. Yes i do have to agree with you and personally i know that this isn't a true Capri either. It also has an odd place in the Ford lineup and that is the main topic i want to tell you today. Its more of an opinion rather than a walkaround today.

So lets quickly look at the design. At the front and back you get the dog-bone structure with the headlights and taillights connected by a black bar. the Front is very minimalistic as there is a small central air vent and some slim side vents and this is also similar to the back. Along the side you get the C shape on the back like the original Capri but that's where the changes end. Some parts are shared with the new Ford Explorer too for example the front wings, front doors and the bonnet. The platform is also shared too which means this sits on the Volkswagen MEB Platform which underpins the Explorer but also the Volkswagen I.D4, I.D5, Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 E-Tron.

The inside is identical to the Explorer with the vertical infotainment system that hides a cubby hole and loads of Volkswagen switches everywhere. Really this car feels more like a Volkswagen Parts Bin special rather than a proper Ford.

The battery and motor lineup consists of 3 models. you get the basic model with 168 bhp, the extended model with 282 bhp and a 4 wheel drive version with 335 bhp. not a bad choice then for a Coupe SUV.

So this brings me on to my opinion of the new Capri. Ford did the same with the Mustang Mach-E. I could forgive this as they didn't discontinue the Mustang in favor for the SUV. Now i know that this isn't a direct replacement for the 80s Capri but they have used the name directly. For me it doesn't work as there is hardly any styling elements connecting the 2 Capri's together. Its an all new car with no heritage. Really its a crime to call it a Capri but lets look at it this way, what ford design elements do you see. That's correct there isn't any Ford design elements like what the Puma and Kuga have. If you look at them you can clearly see they are a Ford. If you look at this and covered up the name and a badge you would be mistaken to think that this is an all new car from an all new brand. Then you also have the size of the Capri. It is basically identical to the Mustang Mach-E. This means that Ford has some internal rivalry going on. Should you go for the Mustang Mach-e or the Capri?. Is Ford going to discontinue the Mustang Mach-E for the Capri. Who knows. Personally i believe that Ford has lost their way in the designing department and the naming department. We are loosing great cars like the Fiesta and Focus in favor for this. I think this is a bad move from Ford that will bite them in the long run.
