The covers have come off the new Cupra Terramar with Hybrid technology and it aims to be the best seller.
Yes, unlike the recent Cupra's with the Born and Tavascan, the Terramar has an engine. The base engine is the usual Volkswagen group 1.5 litre eTSI unit which makes 148 bhp. This is connected exclusively to a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox. The next version is a 2.0 litre TSI unit producing 200 bhp or 262 bhp depending on what option you choose. again this is available only with a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox but they both have all wheel drive. There is also 2 plug in hybrid options too. These start with a 1.5 litre turbo engine but have an electric motor attached to it to create either 200 bhp or 268 bhp. There is also a 19.4 kWh battery pack to give the Terramar up to 70 miles of electric range and it can be topped up to 11kW AC or 50kW DC.
The design of the Terramar isn't as extravagant as the Tavascan and some customers may like this. We have some clean lines won the side of the car and some cool wheel designs ranging from 18 inches to 20 inches. Up front we get Cupra's new design language that we have seen on the Formentor and Leon Facelift. We get the 3 triangle headlight design and a big central air vent with some sporty side vents. Round the back it is very similar to the Formentor with it having a light bar and light up logo as well as the triangle taillights. we also get the Cupra lettering and a sporty lower bumper with no fake exhausts which is nice.
Inside the new Terramar, we get a simple, usual, but sporty design that doesn't feel too over the top like the Tavascan. We get the new 12.9 inch Cupra infotainment system based on the new MiB4 software. we also get a decent sized instrument cluster as well as copper inserts around the cabin. We also get the new Volkswagen group gear selector with it being near the steering wheel and talking about the steering wheel, it has real buttons which is great news. The overall feel is driver orientated with the simply designed centre console separated from the passenger. We also get the new premium Sennheiser sound system which sounds great and we also get a lot of ambient lighting around the cabin. There is also a new seat design that looks premium and like it has came out of a sporty Bentley.
With the Cupra Terramar being 4,519mm long it is slightly shorter than the Volkswagen Tiguan sibling but it does share the same wheel base as the Tiguan so interior comfort is the same. The boot space is 10 litres down on the Tiguan with it being 540 litres but it can grow up to 630 litres with an adjustable second row. If you do go for the plug in hybrid though the space with significantly reduce down to 400 to 490 litres because of the batteries which is a shame.
The Cupra Terramar is expected to be released early next year with a starting price of around £34,000 and it will rival the Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tuscon, Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Mazda CX-5.
