Gone has the iDrive controller in replacement for a panoramic infotainment system.
BMW's newest driver focused cockpit design which is also known as BMW Panoramic iDrive will make its debut on the new iX3 this year which will launch its new 'Neue Klasse' platform.
There are 4 key components to the latest iDrive X. We get the Panoramic Vision display which gets rid of the traditional instrument cluster in replacement for a huge 17.9 inch central touchscreen. We also get a new 4 spoke steering wheel and a 3D Heads Up Display but this wont be standard on every model.
This new hardware also gets the latest iDrive X operating system which has been creased entirely in-house. What is different from other versions of iDrive is that this is the first version with Panoramic Vision display and this is essentially a full length Heads Up Display which shows you essental informaton which can have up to 6 customiseable widgets. This can be changed depending on driving modes too. It has been designed in such a way that the sun doesn't affect the view of the screen and this has been done by the brightness and contrast of the screen. BMW have also used a black coating on the windscreen which acts as a reflective film to help it also.
The steering wheel is a bit like what you would find in a Peugeot. It is smaller and you have to look over it to see the new Instrument cluster.
With the main touchscreen being separated from the instrument cluster unlike todays model, the most common functions are put as close to the driver as possible along with the climate control being always visible on the bottom row.
Sadly this is also the first version of iDrive that doesn't have a rotary dial and this is because most modern functions aren't designed to use a dial for example Android Auto or Apple Car Play More people now use the touchscreen or 'BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant'
We are still a few months away from the production version of the iDrive X but from first instance we can see the car will still be a True BMW
