Can the new 2024 Volkswagen Touareg still hold its ground against its rivals?
Exterior – Front
So, are test car today is the normal Touareg, not the R-Line model. With this we get different bumpers over the R-Line. So, whats new with the Touareg then. Well, we get a new grill that stretches the edge of the headlights giving this car a wider but familiar look to before. Some say that it is not noticeable at first glance. We get a new set of headlights too with new day time running light graphics in them with 3 pod lights rather than 2. We get a new centre air vent design connecting the side vents to make one big vent and this looks like it has been mixed with the new Tiguan design and the Golf R-Line design and for me it makes this car look more modern and aggressive but the pre facelift and facelift designs still both look great.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side we don’t get any physical changes, but we do get some new colours and wheel options which now go up to 22 inches. To be honest I like the fact that there are no big changes to the side as it has a smooth, curvy, timeless look to it.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back of the Touareg and we get a different design to what we are used to. To start with we get a new set of taillights, but we also get a new boot opening to house a new light bar that stretches the width of the car. For me I do like this design, and I also like the light up logo but what I don’t like is that the light bar is quite thick and covered in red plastic rather than black plastic. For me the red makes the car look outdated as where the black on the Tiguan looks much more modern. That’s just my taste of course but what do you think. Let me know in the comment section below and whilst you are at it don’t forget to like and subscribe. The bumper is the same as before with these pronounced exhausts that are real. Talking of exhausts lets have a look at what engine options you can have with the new Volkswagen Touareg.
Car and engine specs and price
So, for the new Touareg you can have a Petrol, Diesel, or Plug in Hybrid. They all use a 3 litre V6 engine. The diesels come with either 227 bhp or 282 bhp. Both have a DSG Automatic gearbox with 4 Matic 4-wheel drive. The petrol version also has a 3 litre V6 engine, but it has 335 bhp and again with 4 Matic and a DSG Gearbox. Finally, you can have a plug-in hybrid engine with 376 bhp and 455bhp but that one is reserved for the top of the range R model. The price of the new Volkswagen Touareg starts at £68,950.
Interior – Design
So, getting inside the new Volkswagen Touareg and everything feels familiar as in a 2021 model year we got a new steering wheel. It’s not until you turn the car on that you start to notice changes. This is because it is mainly a software change. The Touareg now has the latest MiB 4 software taken from the new Tiguan and Passat Estate models but in this car, it has the same layout as the old software which I am fine with, but we get better graphics and better speeds, and it is a much better software overall from what we are used to with the MiB 3 software issues. The instrument cluster too has new graphics thanks to the new software but again in the same layout as before. Ambient lighting has been upgraded and we get some new Touareg lettering on the passenger side. The steering wheel is going to be getting another update in the future to replace the haptic buttons with physical buttons, but we don’t exactly know when this is coming yet but it will be soon. Apart from those changes everything else has been kept the same and this is a good thing as everything is laid out perfectly and the seats are very comfy to do long journeys in too. Let’s have a look at the rear seats.
Practicality
So, getting into the back of the Touareg and there is no surprise that legroom and headroom is more than enough, and you can easily get children in the back or child seats. The rear seats can move forward for more boot space or back for more leg space which is a nice touch. We also get a set of climate control switches and vents, and the rear seats are also heated and the materials that are used are of very high quality. You also get USB C ports, and we get some luxurious door cards in the back too. You also get your standard ISOFIX and arm rest too. Let’s have a look in the boot.
Boot Size
Opening the boot of the Volkswagen Touareg and you are welcomed with a huge boot size of 810 litres. This is even 40 litres bigger than the Audi Q7 which it is based on in 5 seat mode. With the seats folded down you get a whopping 1,800 litres of boot space. This is more than enough for most families.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new Volkswagen Touareg. Well, what more do you want with a starting price of £68,000. This car ticks all the boxes in terms of interior and practicality as well as exterior. Its just a shame about the light bar on the back but you won’t see it when you are in the car so I can take a pass on that. The Volkswagen Touareg wins on top in terms of luxury big SUVs of this class, by quite a distance. I would buy this over a BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE any day.
