Is the new Mercedes AMG GT the ultimate performance GT Car?
Exterior – Front
So, as usual, lets start from the front and Mercedes has tried to keep it as familiar as possible. To start with we get the usual Panamericana grill but this time it is flanked by a black surround with some big air intakes lower down very similar to the AMG GT Black Series from the previous generation. Lower down we get a slim central air vent, and we get some discrete side vents just to give it a wider look. The headlights are more rounded than before but still look very aggressive with how its angled. It also has 3 lines for its LED Daytime Running light giving it again a sporty look. Finally on the bonnet we also get the AMG logo where the usual Mercedes badge would be. A very nice touch.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and you can easily see that this is a GT car with its very long bonnet. Just behind the front wheel we get a side vent which has been designed in an aggressive manner. We also get some pop outdoor handles and a minimal amount of creases to keep it looking as smooth as possible. We also get some big haunches over the rear wheels again to finish of the GT look from the side.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back and the design is like what the previous AMG GT but it has been modernised slightly too. to start with we get a set of very slim taillights which just like the LED Daytime Running Lights have 3 lines in them giving it a modern 3D style look. These lights are also connected to a very slim and discrete light bar. Lower down the bumper looks very aggressive with a lot of gloss black and its quad exhaust pipes. We also get some side vents that look very similar to the front ones too. overall then it looks like a GT car, but does it have the power to be a GT car. Well, lets find out by seeing what is under the bonnet.
Car and engine specs and price
So, the engine range on the Mercedes AMG GT is quite interesting. Out of all of the cars I have reviewed that are the GT cars e.g. the DB12, Vantage and the 911, this is the only one that has a full plug-in hybrid system but that is to come later. Lets start with the base model first. This is called GT43. This uses a 4 2 litre 4-cylinder mild hybrid engine which has 419 bhp with 12 bhp mild hybrid assistance. This is mated to a 9 speed Automatic gearbox and power is sent to the rear wheels. It does 0-62 within 4.6 seconds which may seem slow but will do most people. The next engine is called GT55, and this uses a 4 litre V8. The same one you would find in the DB12 and the Vantage. In this it makes 473 bhp though but does a 0-62 within 3.9 seconds which isn’t too bad. It is also 4-wheel drive which is quite interesting to see too. Right, so the version is called GT63, and this uses the same 4 litre V8 but this time the power has increased to 583 bhp which reduces the 0-62 time down to 3.2 seconds which is very quick. It is also mated to a 9-speed automatic powering all 4 wheels. The next version that you can have is called GT63 Pro. This is based on the normal GT63, but the power has increased yet again to 608 bhp but the 0-62 time has been kept at 3.2 and so has the 9-speed automatic gearbox and 4-wheel drive powertrain. So, now its time for the plug in Hybrid powertrain. This is called GT 63 S E and this uses a 4 litre V8 engine which makes 608 bhp and an electric motor which creates a further 200 bhp. combined this beast makes 810 bhp and 1,420 Nm of torque. This is mated to a 9 Speed automatic gearbox and power is sent to all 4 wheels. The electric motor is mated to a 3.7 kWh battery pack which only gives it about 6 miles of electric only range but just like the 911 the main reason why the GT has this system is to put the performance down a lot better. This is evident with the 2.8 second 0-62 time which is very quick. So, the price of the new Mercedes AMG GT starts at £101,685 which isn’t that bad really. Right, lets have a look and see what the interior is like.
Interior – Design
So, climbing inside the new Mercedes AMG GT and you may find that it has a familiar interior. Well, you would be correct. Now this interior is exactly the same as the one you would find in the AMG SL. This is because these 2 cars are both closely related. Now you wont be able to get a convertible version of the AMG GT because that is the SL now. Anyway, what do we have. Well, we get a high dashboard to make the driver feel like they are sitting low down. We get a set of 4 jet style air vents and an integrated instrument cluster which makes it feel more driver focused unlike other Mercedes car that have this instrument cluster. The infotainment system is the MBUX 2.0 that you will find in most Mercedes cars now. It is easy to use, and it has a decent display. The climate controls are on the screen though, but they do stay where they are. The centre console is high and looks cool too, but it is now missing the shortcut buttons that the previous model had. Now I would have liked these as it lets you change things at a touch of a button. The steering wheel is the usual AMG version with your 2 dials to change parts of the car and these effectively replace those buttons in the middle of the car. Finally, we do get a set of comfy AMG seats, but you can upgrade them to some sportier seats if you would like. Right, one new thing for the AMG GT is that is has some rear seats. So, lets have a look and see what they are like.
Practicality
So, getting into the back of the new AMG GT and just like the 911 and DB12 it is a 2+2 which means legroom and headroom is almost non existent but just like those cars you don’t buy it to be practical. You can put a child seat in the back though as it does have ISOFIX points, and it will be ok for small children. Right, lets have a look and see what the boot is like.
Boot Size
So, opening the boot to the AMG GT and you get a decent hatchback style opening which makes it easy to get big items in. we also get a retractable parcel shelf and with that you get 321 litres with the non-plug-in hybrid powertrain or with that one you get an almost unusable 182 litres. To be honest Mercedes have a habit of putting the battery in the boot to take up most of the space and this is a shame really.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new Mercedes AMG GT. Well, it looks more modern and more premium than ever. It can also stand up to a fight much better than before too. it is also a more useable daily too given the fact that it does have some rear seats. It is more practical than the 911 but a lot cheaper than the DB12 if you don’t go for the high-end plug-in hybrid versions. Really on paper this is the best GT car out of all of them. in the head and heart though, well that’s for you to decide. What GT car do you think is the best out of the AMG GT, DB12, Vantage or 911.
