Can Mazda enter the executive saloon market again but with electric?
Exterior – Front
So, starting with the design of the new 6e and it has the new Mazda design language. To start with we get this grill that dominates the front end which lights up around the edge making it look bigger and make it stick out more. Up top we get these what look like headlight units with this cool graphic in it making the car look wider. Well, these aren’t your headlights but just your Daytime Running Lights. The main headlight units are hidden by this black panel lower down which makes the grill look a lot wider. Lower down we get a central air vent which has a decent size, and we also get some discrete side vents too. overall then a very sleek front end.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and we get a very sleek side profile. A lot sleeker than the old 6. We also get a lot of glass area too and a bit of matt black cladding around the wheel arches and lower sills, but this is used to hide the fact it has batteries underneath. We do also get a few chrome touches which is getting rare these days, and you also get some pop outdoor handles and some very Mazda looking wheels. I also like these sporty looking door mirrors too.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back of the 6e and again we get a very sleek but also quite a flat design. Whilst it is quite flat, I don’t mind it. We get these taillights that are very slim and sleek looking with 2 circles in like older Mazda. We also get the Mazda lettering instead of the logo and we also get a sporty looking lower bumper which also has chrome. I think the best part about the rear end though is that we get an electronic deployable spoiler. Adding a lot more stance on the move. A perfect touch for this car then. Right, let’s have a look and see what battery and motor options you can have with the new Mazda 6e.
Car and engine specs and price
So, the Mazda 6e gets 2 battery and motor options. lets start with the slower model first. This uses a single motor setup mounted on the rear wheels giving it rear wheel drive. This has 241 bhp and uses an 80-kWh battery pack. This gives the car a 342-mile range which isn’t too bad actually, but it could be better. 0-62 is delt within 7.8 seconds which isn’t too bad either. What isn’t good though is the charging speed on this model. It is only 90 kW max speed. That less than any Stellantis car. I have no idea why but it definitely isn’t the best. The next one is the more powerful one with 254 bhp. this uses a single motor mounted on the rear giving it rear wheel drive. This strangely uses a smaller 68.8 kWh battery pack which only gives a 298-mile range. 0-62 is delt within 7.6 seconds which is barely noticeable. What is better though is the charging speed which is as 165 kW. Almost double the other model which is strange. The price of the new Mazda 6e hasn’t been announced yet but expect it to start around the £45,000 mark when it is released later this year. right lets have a look and see what the interior is like.
Interior – Design
So, climbing inside the new Mazda 6e and we get a very different interior design to what we are used to with Mazda. To start with we get a very premium dashboard design with a big 14.6-inch infotainment system. It is all new software, and it does unfortunately house the climate controls, but it isn’t too bad to use and is fairly logical but unfortunately all of the features that you may need to use are buried deep within the infotainment system which is a shame. The instrument cluster is all digital and has a good graphics on it and it is also easy to read too. the dashboard design overall is premium and high end with a lot of good materials and chrome finishes. In front of the driver, we get a dual tone 2 spoke steering wheel design which makes it look like it has come out of an S Class and what actually has come out of an S Class admittedly the previous generation are the indicator and drive select stalks. The centre console is minimalistic, but it does have a nice finish as well as chrome and a lot of leather too. the seats have this one-piece design to it but again are design for comfort and have a lot of chrome on them. it is one truly luxurious car. right, lets have a look and see what the rear seats are like.
Practicality
So, climbing into the back of the 6e and if you are impressed in the front of the car, the rear is no different. The luxury feel continues in the back with high end materials and a lot of chrome touches especially in the front seats. You also get a lot of storage too and even your own climate control system, Air vents and USB C ports as well as an arm rest. Legroom is more than ok and headroom is decent too considering it has a sloping roof and a sunroof. Really then a proper executive car. right, let’s have a look and see what the boot space is like.
Boot Size
So, opening the boot and you are welcomed with a hatchback style opening which instantly makes it more practical than its saloon rivals. Boot space is 466 litres with the seats up which is better than the BYD Seal for example. You also don’t get any load lip and the opening is quite low down too which means it is easier to get items in. if you fold the seats down then it does increase to 1,074 litres which isn’t the best but that is because it is measures with the parcel shelf on and below the rear seat height. There is a front boot which is 72 litres in size which does mean there is plenty of room for your charging cables and more.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new Mazda 6e. well it is a huge step up over the previous Mazda and it can easily beat its rivals like the BYD and the Volkswagen ID.7 as well as the upcoming BMW i3 and the Mercedes C Class EQ. the only disappointing part is that it feels like it has lost a bit of that Mazda magic in the driving that every Mazda has. It just feels like any other electric car. Also, I still don’t know what is going on with their battery and motor options. it is the most peculiar thing ever. still, it is a lot better than the MX-30 electric SUV.
