Is Alpine's first SUV any good?

Exterior – Front

So, starting with the design of the new A390 and it doesn’t actually differ much from the concept car. we get this futuristic and concept like front end with 4 LED Daytime Running Light elements of which are connected with a light bar. You also get these little triangles down the side that light up giving it a menacing look a bit like what Peugeot have with their fangs. The central air vent is decrease which is nice and we also get some decent looking side vents that also house the main headlight unit. The front bumper design is minimalistic looking with no fake grill but we also get this aerodynamic vent just below the light bar that vents through the bumper giving it a big aerodynamic advantage.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side and we get this athletic and sporty design that basically looks like a bigger version of the A110. We get this black contrast roof and curvy glass design. We also get a lot of sharp creases along the side and some gloss black wheel arches and lower sills. You even have hidden door handles which is nice. The overall design does give it a very sporty look but also a premium and high end one. More than you would expect from a Renault.

Exterior – Rear

Moving round to the back of the A390 and this is where we get a really good-looking design. To start with we get this light bar which houses the taillights and the light up Alpine badge. The taillights have this X style in them just like rallying tape. You also get these triangles down the side just like the front but on the back, they don’t light up. What I also like is the double boot lip spoiler. It just adds a bit of extra sporty character. The bumper design is sporty but aerodynamically optimised with these panels that stick out either side to help pass the air through. There is even some aerodynamic trickery underneath too which is nice. Right, lets have a look and see what battery and motor options you can have with the new Alpine A390.

Car and engine specs and price

So, for the Alpine A390 you can have 2 options, both very good. Lets start with the base model. This has a triple motor setup, yes you heard that right, the base model has a triple motor setup. This gets 395 bhp and this is mated to an 89-kWh battery pack which isn’t big in today’s standards, but it does give the A390 341 miles of range which is decent. This version can do 0-62 within 4.8 seconds which is good. The next and final version is again a triple motor setup, but the power has increased to 464 bhp. this can do 0-62 within 3.9 seconds and is mated to the same 89 kWh battery pack reducing the range slightly to 312 but this is still very useable. Both models can charge fairly quickly at 190 kW which isn’t the best but isn’t too bad. The price of the new Alpine A390 starts at £61,390 which undercuts the new Porsche Cayenne Electric by £20,000 which is a lot and that’s not even the more expensive coupe version that is yet to be announced. Right, lets have a look and see what the interior is like.

Interior – Design

So, stepping inside the new Alpine A390 and we get a very premium look and feel. It also feels a lot like a Renault too. to start with we get this panel that stretches from the driver’s side to the centre console, and this houses your infotainment system. This is basically the Renault Android Automotive system with Alpine’s theme on top which it does work quite well and because it is android you can get loads of apps too. the instrument cluster is better than Renaults though as it is clearer and you can have a more classical and premium look to it. Moving back to the centre console and we do get some climate control switches which is very nice or you can adjust it on the screen. Whatever suits you best. The centre console also houses your gear selector as apposed to the silly Renault stalk. This suits this car much better and gives it a sportier feel. The centre console also has a decent amount of storage too. in front of the driver, you got this very sporty looking steering wheel which has a flat bottom and top. This again also uses premium materials and has 2 dials, one for you regen and one for your mode. It feels very Porsche like. You even have a boost button too. the door cards also look and feel premium with a lot of nice touches which again I really like. The seats are also sporty and comfy feeling with this one-piece design. They are also quite thick too giving it a GT feel again better than Porsche. Dare I say it, it may be one of the best Renault Alpine interiors I have ever seen. Even in this segment. Right, lets have a look and see what the rear seats are like.

Practicality

Climbing into the back of the A390 and there is plenty of legroom and headroom, but what I will say is that it does feel quite dark. You also don’t get an armrest either but there are a lot of premium materials. You get this carbon fibre look in the back of the rear seats and the seats do looks gt like and sturdy which makes this car feel more premium. you also get some USB C ports as well as air vents. Right, lets have a look at the boot

Boot Size

So, opening the boot to the new A390 and you are welcomed with a generous 532 litre boot space. there is also hardly any load lip and there is some storage under the boot floor. If you fold the seats down 60:40 split, then it does increase to 1,643 litres which again isn’t too bad. I would have liked a 40:20:40 split though.

Summary

So, in summary then what do I think of the new Alpine A390. Well, it is one special car that has shaken the premium SUV market up. It has a special feel that has been lost with Porsche for some time. It has a very unique look and stance to it that cars haven’t had for some time. The interior again feels very high end and even better than its rivals. Practicality is also decent but with just a few little niggles. The best part about this car though is the price. It really makes it more accessible and a bargin compared to its rivals.  Really, I cannot complain about this car. it is one special car to have that’s for sure.
