New Mazda MX-5 2024 Update Review

Has Mazda got what it takes to keep the MX-5 relevant in 2024?

Exterior – Front

So, since 2015 Mazda has done a few changes each year to keep it fresh for example an engine change and mechanical changes, but this is the first time the outside gets a proper upgrade. One of the big updates is a new set of LED adaptive headlights with a new design to the Daytime Running Lights. They now also have a new LED indicator design too. the grill has also got an update as well as some new side vents which gives this car a sportier look but also it still has an aggressive face.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side and there are no changes apart for some new BBS alloy wheels. We do get this swoopy side design with bulging wheel arches which I do like.

Exterior – Rear

Moving round to the back and we do get some design updates, but they are very minimal. We get a set of new taillights that are now fully LED. The bumper is also different with some new inserts too. apart from that, that’s everything that is new on the outside. Let’s have a look on the inside at the updates.

Interior – Design

So, climbing inside and there are some updates. To start with we get the new Mazda infotainment system. This adds over the air updates as well as wireless apple car play and Android Auto. You even get USB C ports now. The instrument cluster has also had a slight update with some new font. Everything else though is the same and to be honest for a 9-year-old car it does still feel quite modern which I do quite like. The dashboard consists of the infotainment system, 3 knobs for the climate control and the speedometer. The centre console consists of the gear stick, a manual hand brake as well as an arm rest and a knob for the radio. Let’s have a look at the boot.

Boot Size

So, opening the boot in the MX-5 and there is no surprise that the size is the same as before at 130 litres. This is fine for a weekend away and the roof doesn’t affect the space which is good. You also get some storage within the car just between the seats but there isn’t a glove box which is a shame. Let’s have a look at what mechanical upgrades there have been but lets also have a look at what engines you can have.

Car and engine specs and price

so, the mechanical upgrades for the MX-5 are quite significant. You now get a track mode which alters the stability control on some trim levels. Theres also a new limited slip differential on the manual cars too as well as a quicker response to the electronic power assisted steering and improved throttle response with a better sounding exhaust. Right, let’s talk engines.

So, lets start with the base engine. This is a 1.5 litre with 129 bhp. this can do 0-62 in 8.3 seconds, and this can be had with a 6-speed manual and the best part it is rear wheel drive. The next engine is the top of the range 2.0 litre engine with 180 bhp and this again can only be had with a 6-speed manual and is rear wheel drive. Again 0-62 is delt within 6.5 seconds which is quite quick is such a small car. Both engines are quite efficient too at 42 MPG for both which again isn’t that bad. The price of the new Mazda MX-5 starts at £28,000.

Summary

So, the MX-5. Still as good as it was back in 2015 and the improvements made has made it even better than ever. If you want a cheap, affordable, and reliable 2 seat convertible then this is the best car to go for. Even if you go used you still won’t be disappointed.
