Is the first Hybrid city car the best?
Exterior – Front
So, the styling at the front of the new Toyota Aygo X is quite different to the outgoing model. To start with we get a set of slimmer headlights which give this car a much sportier but boxy look. These now also have LED Headlights on most of the range too. these lights are connected with a silver strip making you think it has a light bar which personally I would think it would look better. Lower down we get this big grill that doubles up as a central air vent too. this gives it its X pattern design at the front like the previous generation Aygo had. You can also now get a sporty GR-Sport version. This gives it a black bonnet and a slightly sportier bumper with some side vents.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and there isn’t that many changes apart from the indicator light moving from the front wing to the door mirror and the car being 76mm longer at the front to accommodate the hybrid powertrain. We also get some new colour options and some sportier and stylish wheel options but what do you think to these wheels. They are 18 inches in size and are the biggest you can get on a smallest car which is a negative as it is very hard to get tyres that size. they do look out of proportion but let me know what you think in the comment section below and whilst you are at it don’t forget to like and subscribe. We still get the black plastic cladding though to give it more of an off roader look which is different on a small car.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back of the Aygo X and there aren’t any changes to talk about. You get the same style taillights and an all-glass boot opening which will be expensive to replace which is a bit of a shame, but the Aygo has always had this. It does still look quite modern though and quite quirky because of the black paint making the car look all black. Right, lets have a look and see what engine and gearbox options you can have with the new Aygo X as there are some big changes to talk about.
Car and engine specs and price
So, for the Aygo X there will be only 1 powertrain available and this is the new hybrid system. but this is the same unit from the Yaris Hybrid and replaces the 1.0 litre unit. This means it’s a 1.5 litre turbo with 114 bhp. it can do 0-62 within 9.2 seconds and is mated to an automatic CVT gearbox which does whine at higher speeds. What is great though is that you can get 78 mpg out of it which is the most efficient non plug in hybrid car you can buy currently. Unfortunately there isnt a manual pure petrol anymore which means if you want a manual Aygo X you will then have to go for a used model. The price of the new Toyota Aygo X has not been announced yet but I will let you know once it has. Right, lets have a look and see what the interior is like.
Interior – Design
So, climbing inside the new Aygo X and we have a few changes to talk about. Now, to start with everything is the same as before with the same dashboard design and plastic. We do get an updated centre console though with an electric parking brake and we also get an automatic shifter too. the infotainment system has changed and rather than having multiple different systems, you can now only get the usual Toyota Lexus system which has a nice premium layout and is very easy to use. Because of this it also lifts the interior feel up. In front of the driver, we get a digital instrument cluster and finally we get some new materials on the seats. Yes, it does feel quite cheap inside but then it is a cheap car, and you must cut costs somewhere. I don’t think there has been a recent car that has a premium high end feel that is this small and cheap. Right, lets have a look and see what the rear seats are like.
Practicality
So, getting into the back of the Aygo and because it is a small car the legroom isn’t the best, but headroom is quite decent because of its off-roader style. Now there is only 4 seats as where the i10 and Picanto has 5 but this does mean you get better shoulder room. You can also just about get a child seat in the back, but the doors don’t open quite wide enough for my liking. Right, lets have a look at the boot.
Boot Size
so, opening the boot to the new Aygo X and you are welcomed with 231 litres of space which is less than the i10 and Picanto. You can fit a few small cases but you wont be able to fit any baby items inside because its that small which is a shame really. If you fold the seats down though you get 829 litres which is much more useable.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new Toyota Aygo X Facelift then. Well, its one of those cars that is unique. It has a quirky design and a premium Ish interior. The practicality isn’t the best but then really it doesn’t need to be because you wouldn’t buy it as a main car with a family of 4 would you. You would buy an SUV for that. Really this is for driving round town or for first time drivers or for a one-person family car. if we look at it like that it is a superb car. it’s cheap to run, very efficient and has a lot of safety systems and technology and is a better value car than a used premium SUV at the same price. Really then this car shouldn’t be overlooked if it fits your lifestyle.
