Can MG beat the Tesla Model Y by entering unknown territory for MG?

Exterior – Front

So, in terms of design on the new MG IM6 it is very similar to the IM5. We get these big swoopy headlights that are a bit bigger on this model and feature a slightly different graphic for the LED Daytime Running Light giving the front a higher look. The bumper also follows a similar design to the IM5, but the side vents are much bigger and also house fog lights which the IM5 doesn’t have. They are also not connected to the central air vent which on this car is much bigger too. the overall design though does actually some how look a bit sportier and more athletic than the IM5 which I do quite like.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side of the IM6 and it is very similar to the IM5. We get some flush door handles and this curvy design giving it a premium look. We also get 2 sets of cameras and a decent green house area too. what is different is this black panel lower down and this was added to give the car a sleeker look which I do think helps. The wheel designs are the same as the IM5 which is a bit of a shame, but they are liveable.

Exterior – Rear

Moving round to the back of the IM6 and again it is very similar to the IM5, but it does look different. We get this black panel on it with this futuristic looking light bar. We also get this bigger duck tail spoiler which makes it look a lot like an Aston Martin DBX. What we don’t get is a body-coloured bar which I do think makes this car look sportier and clean looking. The bumper is slightly different to the IM5 as in the fake side vents are much bigger. We also get the IM logo and the MG lettering in the IM font. Right, lets have a look and see what battery and motor options you can have with the new MG IM6.

Car and engine specs and price

So, for the battery and motor options you can have 2 options. the first model is the long-range model and this uses a 100 kWh battery pack and a 408 bhp motor this can do 0-62 in 5.4 seconds which is quite quick and the range is 388 miles which is very decent for an SUV. The final version is the performance version, and this uses the same 100 kWh battery pack but this time it has a dual motor setup giving it 4-wheel drive and a huge 752 bhp. this can do 0-62 in a very quick 3.5 seconds, and the range isn’t too bad at 313 miles too so this would be the best one to go for if you can afford it. Talking of price, the MG IM5 starts at £47,995 which is a lot for an MG but is about right for the types of cars it rivals. Right, let’s have a look and see what the interior is like

Interior – Design

So, climbing inside the IM6 and it borrows the interior from the IM5. This means that the interior is nothing like any other MG. to start with we get a 2-screen setup. We get this big widescreen display which incorporates the instrument cluster and infotainment system into one display. This looks very modern and premium. the second screen is in the centre console, and this houses the cars settings and climate control. We do get a lot of swoopy elements in this car too as well as a lot of vegan leather making it feel more premium than any other car in its class. The centre console is minimalistic but houses a few storage areas and in front of the driver we get a set of nice indicator stalks and a nice and premium steering wheel which looks a bit like the older MG steering wheels. The seats are very supportive but also comfy with a ventilated function. A first for an MG. the overall fit and finish isn’t too bad, but you can easily look past it because of the design. The ergonomics are ok too considering the layout. Right, let’s have a look and see what the rear seats are like.

Practicality

So, climbing into the back of the IM6 and legroom isn’t too bad, and headroom is also slightly better than the IM5 because but is slightly affected by the sloping roof still. There are some premium touches as well as an arm rest and some air vents, but the seats are still quite low to the ground just like the IM5 which means you still sit in a squatted position. I didn’t think the IM6 would be quite as bad, but it is the same as the IM5 which is a bit of a shame really and if you carry tall people in the back all the while then this may not be the best car to do it in. right, lets have a look and see what the boot space is like.

Boot Size

Opening the boot to the MG IM6 and you are welcomed with a 665-litre boot space with the seats up. This is very practical and there is no load lip. Also, the boot opening is quite low making it easier to lift heavier items in. it is also just over 200 litres bigger than the IM5. If you fold the seats down 60:40 then this increases to 1,640 litres which again is very practical. There is even a 32-litre front boot to store your charging cables in. this is double the size of what you get in the IM5 which is very good. You may be able to even put your weekly shopping in.

Summary

So, in summary then what do I think of the new MG IM6. Well just like the MG IM5 it is an MG to start with which means you get a 7-year warranty as well as a decent battery range that is quite accurate going by MG’s history of electric range. The style is quite decent, and premium looking and actually looks better than the IM5 which is still a great car. The interior has a premium feel that we haven’t seen from MG before. The practicality isn’t too bad but an adult doing a long journey in the back will be a bit uncomfortable but children in the back will be fine and practicality is good and better than the IM5. Also, just like the IM5 the segment the IM6 is in is very tight and competitive but I can still easily see this car being relevant and possibly even popular. It worth considering this car and taking a look at it.
