Can the launch of the Nissan Micra save Nissan from disappearing altogether?

Exterior – Front

So, starting with the design of the Nissan Micra and it follows the same story as the Renault 5 did. It uses an older design but has been made modern. In this case the design has been borrowed from the third generation which ran from 2002 to 2010. This can be seen with the circular LED Daytime running lights which look very futuristic. We get these very slim led headlights that make it look like a person squinting at you. These also extend around the side giving it a much wider look. Moving lower down and we get a lot of gloss black plastic giving it a more aggressive look. We also get a bit of silver too and a lower central air vent which is very discrete.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side and we can clearly see the silhouette of the Renault 5 with this chrome finish. All the body panels are different though. This gives the Micra a more rounded look rather than the edgier 5. We do get some gloss black wheel arches and the lower sill too as well as a hidden door handle like the 5 but I am ok with that. The wheel designs also look quite sporty and unique which is good. I also like the choice of colours you can have with the Nissan Micra too as it makes the car even more unique.

Exterior – Rear

Moving round to the back and the Nissan Micra takes a bit of inspiration from the front. To start with we have some circular taillights that mimic the LED Daytime running lights. They also have a body colour cut out in the middle a bit like what the old Fiat 500 had. This gives it a modern and almost concept like look. These taillights are connected with a black bar with the Nissan lettering. I can see why they have done this as the Renault 5 has a black bar, but I think I would have preferred just the Nissan logo to give it a cleaner look. Lower down the bumper has more gloss black plastic which breaks up the design and gives the car a premium look. Overall then it isn’t too bad, but the rear design may not be to everyone’s taste. The car does feel a lot more premium though which I do quite like. Right, lets have a look and see what battery and motor options you can have with the new Nissan Micra.

Car and engine specs and price

So, from launch the Nissan Micra will have 2 powertrain models. Let’s start with the first one. This is called standard range, and this uses a 119 bhp electric motor mounted on the front wheels giving it front wheel drive. This can do 0-62 in 9 seconds which isn’t too bad and is mated to a 40-kWh battery pack giving a range of 198 miles which isn’t the best but isn’t too bad either. the final version is called extended range and uses a more powerful 148 bhp electric motor mounted on the front giving it front wheel drive. This can do 0-62 in 8 seconds which isn’t as big of a difference as you would expect but that is because it gets a bigger 52 kWh battery pack giving it 260 miles of range which is much more useable. The price of the new Nissan Micra starts at £22,995 which is very cheap for an electric car and even considering its petrol rivals like the Corsa and Polo is cheaper than them with the same amount of specification. This is very good. Right, lets have a look and see what the interior is like

Interior – Design

So, climbing inside the new Nissan Micra and there is no surprise that the interior is based on the Renault 5. This means we get this very retro dashboard which has a 3-part design to it. To start with we get this big shelf with soft touch materials on it, and this houses your infotainment system and instrument cluster. This has been designed to be driver orientated and sporty which does suit this car well. It runs Renaut’s latest Android Automotive infotainment system, and it does work very well. The instrument cluster is also very clear and easy to read too. we also get this black bar which I would of like to have some type of graphic on it, but it does make the car feel a bit more premium. lower down we get a set of air vents and just below this a set of climate control switches which is quite nice. You also get your electric parking brake switch too and a lot of storage. In front of the driver we get the Renault steering wheel with the Nissan logo on it which I am ok with because most people wouldn’t notice. What I am not a fan of though is the situation with Renault’s stalks. There is just way to many stalks to deal with, and it just looks a mess. It is a shame really as that could be a deal breaker for some people. We do get these retro looking front seats that are comfy and supportive, and I just want to mention the textured headliner that you also get on the Renault 5. It looks very cool, and I still wish other cars had it. Right, let’s have a look at the rear seats.

Practicality

So, climbing into the back of the Nissan Micra and just like the Renault 5 with the boxy proportions, headroom isn’t that bad, and legroom is also decent. If you are over 6 foot though you may struggle. Also, there are a few plastics around the place and there aren’t any rear USB C ports, air vents or an arm rest which is a shame but then it is a small car, so we can’t complain too much. Let’s have a look and see what the boot space is like.

Boot Size

So, opening the boot to the Nissan Micra and you are welcomed with a generous 326 litres with the seats up. This is identical to the Renault 5 unsurprisingly. What is also not surprising is that if you fold the seats down it increases to the same as the Renault 5 at 1,106 litres with the seats folding down. Whilst we do get a wide boot opening though there is a very high loading lip so it will be harder to lift things in. Also, there is no storage under the bonnet so there is no separate space to store the charging cables which is a shame too.

Summary

So, in summary then what do I think of the new Nissan Micra. Well, considering it is based on the Renault 5 structurally, you wouldn’t actually know that it is. Enough things have been changed to make it look and feel like a Nissan still. Yes, it uses the Renault interior, but it has been changed enough that most people wouldn’t actually notice and that’s how you know that the car has been designed right. Really this is a proper Nissan Micra for the next generation and is a true competitor to the Renault 5. For the price and what you are getting it is hard to believe that we are now living in a time where electric cars can easily rival petrol cars on price. This might be the very car that saves Nissan.
