Is the Ford Capri really a Capri and is it a Good Ford or is it a flop like its launch?
Exterior – Front
So, lets start with the design of the new Ford Capri and there are some call backs to the original Capri with the dog bone front end and the LED Daytime running light graphic looking like dual circle headlights. It does look quite sporty and does give the car a unique look. Lower down we get a discrete lower air vent that is in gloss black to match the cladding throughout the car and we also get some side vents that are just right for the car. I would like to see some connections with other Ford cars though which is a shame.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and you can see more gloss black cladding around the wheel arches and lower down. We also get a c shaped rear window similar to the Capri. The overall silhouette is quite sporty looking too similar to what the old Mondeo was like.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back and we get a similar design to the front as in 2 humps on the taillights to resemble 2 circles. We also get the new Ford badge and the Capri lettering. Lower down on the bumper it does look quite sporty with more gloss black panelling and overall, the look is quite decent. For it being a Ford. Overall then the design isn’t that bad if you look past the Capri name and to be honest in person it is actually better than the press release pictures. Right, lets have a look at what battery and motor options you can get with the new Ford Capri.
Car and engine specs and price
So, as you may already know the Ford Capri is based on the Volkswagen MEB Platform. This means that it is closely related to the Volkswagen ID5 and Cupra Tarascan. So now that’s cleared up let’s see what choices there are. There are 3 versions of the Capri. Let’s start with the base model. This uses a 55-kWh battery pack and a single rear wheel drive motor setup. This has 168 bhp and a 0-62 time of 8.7 seconds which isn’t that bad. The range is also decent at around 237 miles. The next version uses a 77-kWh battery pack, and a single motor mounted on the rear wheels making 282 bhp. This has a 0-62 time of just 6.4 seconds and a range of 389 miles which is very useable in day-to-day life. Finally, we have the top of the range dual motor model. This uses a 79-kWh battery pack and a dual motor setup with one motor on the front and back making it 4-wheel drive. This has 335 bhp and a 5.3 second 0-62 time. The range of this car is about 275 miles because of the dual motor design. The price of the new Ford Capri starts at £42,075 which is just about right compared to its rivals. Right lets have a look at the interior.
Interior – Design
So, climbing inside and things start to go down hill slightly. Now as I have said with the battery and motors the Capri is based on the Volkswagen platform and this is obvious inside with the same indicator stalks, window switches and volume slider. Even the steering wheel controls are touch sensitive, but I am going to look past that although it is very annoying. The overall dashboard design is very modern and sleek looking. You get this B&O sound bar up top which sounds very great. We also get a second layer down with a full width style air vent which again looks premium. lower down we get some light-coloured materials, and, in the centre, we get this 14.6-inch portrait touchscreen running Ford Sync Move which is a Volkswagen MiB4 based operating system. It has a decent layout, and it does work very well and is easy to use and you do have some quick shortcuts up top. The climate control is on the screen, but it stays in place all the time. Now you may be thinking that there isn’t that much storage, but ford has given the Capri a moving screen. If you slide the screen back, you have a huge cubby hole which you can hide things under and locks the screen in place when the car locks which is very clever. You also get some more cubby holes in the centre console and some cup holders and some storage under the centre console. There is also a decent amount of space under the arm rest too. The steering wheel is very similar to the explorers in terms of design but the 3 spoke resembles the old 80s Capri steering wheel which I do quite like. Finally, we come to the seats and yes whilst they aren’t the prettiest to look at, they are very comfy Volkswagen seats which is nice, and they also have a memory function and a massage function so the driver can drive in comfort. Lets have a look and see what it is like in the back.
Practicality
So, climbing in the back seats and you are welcomed with a dark but airy space. We get a decent amount of legroom and headroom isn’t that bad considering it does have a sloping roof. you also get 2 USB C ports and some air vents as well as an arm rest but apart from that, that is it. It would have been a bit brighter if you have a panoramic roof and if the headrests were not integrated but it isn’t a bad place to be. Lets have a look and see what the boot space is like.
Boot Size
So, opening the boot to the Capri and you are welcomed to 572 litres of boot space which is more than its sibling the Volkswagen ID5. Folding the rear seats down and this increases to 1,510 litres which is again decent enough and is perfect for a family.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think to the new Ford Capri. Well, if it wasn’t called a Capri then it is a great electric SUV Coupe from Ford that will be very popular. It has the looks inside and out to suit the younger market and the battery and motor options make it great and easy to use in the usual day to day life. The Capri also has a decent drive and feels sporty too. overall then a decent car but if it shouldn’t be called the Capri then what should it be called. Well, I think the Mondeo name would of fitted better as this car is practical, saloon coupe like and has 4 doors. Overall then the perfect name. What do you think. Let me know in the comments below.
