Is the final internal combustion engine Cupra the best one?

Exterior – Front

The Cupra Terramar is essentially an indirect replacement to the Cupra Ateca as it is based on the new Volkswagen Tiguan like the Cupra Ateca was based on the previous Tiguan. This also means that this will be the last new internal combustion engine Cupra. So, what design elements do we have then. Well, we get the 3-triangle signature LED Daytime running light element in the sharply shaped headlights. Sadly, these aren’t connected with a bar or a light up grill like the Tavascan as that would have been nice to see but we do get a huge central air vent with a big mesh pattern giving it an aggressive look. We also get a set of side vents and for lights too giving this an aggressive look overall.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side and we get a very premium side profile that almost mimics the new Audi Q6 E-Tron with a sloping roof element and a reverse shark fin d pillar. We also get a little kink on the rear window and some pronounced body colour wheel arches. We also get some copper elements on the wheels too and some sharp creases giving it a progressive design to it.

Exterior – Rear

Moving round to the back and it is business as usual. We get the 3 triangle lights connected with a light bar and light up logo. We also get the Cupra badge name plate and lower down a very aggressive bumper with gloss black and gloss silver elements. What I would like to see though is some big sporty exhausts to give it a more aggressive rear end. Maybe even a tinted rear taillight element or give it the same treatment as the new Tiguan so the taillights are clear and only the specific parts are red giving it a modern and premium look. Anyway, lets have a look and see what engine and gearbox options you can have with the new Cupra Terramar.

Car and engine specs and price

So, the engine range consists of 3 petrol engines and 2 plug in hybrid petrol engines. Lets start with the base petrol engine first. This is the usual 1.5 Litre Turbo unit which produces 148 bhp and can do 0-62 within 9.3 seconds. This is front wheel drive and can only be had with a 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox. The next engine is a 2.0 litre Turbo unit which produces 200 bhp. the 0-62 time has not been announced as of yet as at the time of making this video the engine has only just been released to the public. This can only be had with a 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox though, but the power is sent to all 4 wheels. The final petrol engine is the same 2.0 litre turbo unit but this time it makes 263 bhp and this has a 0-62 time of just 5.9 seconds. This is mated to a 7-speed automatic DSG gearbox and it sends its power to the front wheels. Lets have a look at the plug-in hybrid engines and the range kicks off with a 1.5 litre turbo engine which has a combined power output of 200 bhp. this can do 0-62 within 8.3 seconds and is mated to a 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox. It has a 19.7 kWh battery pack which gives an electric range of about 65 miles on a single charge depending on the conditions. The final plug-in hybrid engine uses the same 1.5 litre turbo unit but this time it produces a combined output of 268 bhp. This reduces the 0-62 time down to 7.3 seconds and is mated to a 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox. This also uses the same 19.7 kWh battery pack giving about the same electric only range, again depending on external conditions. The price of the new Cupra Terramar starts at £37,605. Right, lets have a look and see what the interior is like.

Interior – Design

So, climbing inside the new Cupra Terramar and I want to start by saying this is my ideal Cupra interior. We get the new Cupra design language interior with the bug eye dashboard. We also get the new MiB 4 software with light up touch sensitive sliders. We also get a decent digital instrument cluster that is easy to see and use. We also get plenty of copper elements as well as some new indicator stalks. We also get plenty of switches too and a premium looking centre console that has been designed to separate the interior space to make it more driver oriented. We also get a decent amount of practicality too as well as lots of ambient lighting and these new comfy seats. The overall feel is very premium and high end and to be honest feels better and more refined and finished that the Volkswagen Tiguan Version. Right, lets have a look and see what the rear space is like.

Practicality

So, getting into the back and we get a decent amount of legroom and headroom. We also get premium materials in the back still and even some ambient lighting as well as a decent amount of storage, an armrest, USB C Ports and your own climate control unit and air vents. We even get some copper elements too which is nice. Right, let’s have a look and see what the boot space is like.

Boot Size

So, opening the boot to the new Cupra Terramar and you are welcomed with 540 litres with the rear seats all the way back but if you slide them forward this increases to 642 litres. The plug-in hybrid versions will have less space expected to be around 470 litres. We don’t know the space with the seats down at the moment, but I will let you know once I have found out.

Summary

So, in summary then, what do I think of the new Cupra Terramar, well it is a very good Cupra and is the blueprint of what Cupra should be in the future. It has the cool Cupra looks inside and out and has a decent engine range to choose from and you also get a decent amount of equipment even on the lower trim levels. Really this is the best family car in the Volkswagen Group range.
