Is the new Audi Q5 an improvement to rival its German Cousins and still feel like a true Audi?
Exterior – Front
So, from the front and changes may seem hard to spot at first as it doesn’t have the split headlight design like so many new Audi’s these days, but the changes are there. To start with we get this new grill design with a big mesh pattern in it with a curvy octagonal design like the Audi Q3. I do like this design as it looks less fussy and more free flowing like the older Q5’s. the headlights as I have said are all one unit but still house the changeable LED Daytime running light and the brilliant Matrix headlight system. These also look sleek making the grill more pronounced up top because of the deep indent. The central air vent is much bigger than before, and these connect the big, exaggerated side vents which yes do look too big for this car but at the same time suit this car well.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and we get the usual Q5 silhouette. We get a lot of chrome still and some grey coloured sill and wheel arches. We also get a few creases too. sadly, though we don’t get the new style Audi door handles which would have been nice to see.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back of the new Audi Q5 and it is business as usual. We get a set of slim taillights which are connected with a lightbar. We also get a decent looking bumper with some real exhausts which is great. We also get the new Audi and Q5 logos too. the design does look a bit like the new A3 which I do quite like. Anyway, lets have a look and see what engine and gearbox options you can have with the new Audi Q5.
Car and engine specs and price
The engine range on the new Audi Q5 has been slimmed down to just 1 petrol option and 1 diesel option. Lets start with the petrol option first. This uses a 2 litre turbo unit which has 200 bhp. this can do 0-62 in 7.2 seconds and is mated to a 7 speed S-Tronic gearbox sending its power to all 4 wheels using the Quattro system. For the diesel engine, this uses a 2 litre unit with again 200 bhp. this can do 0-62 in 7.4 seconds and it is mated to a 7 speed S-Tronic gearbox powering all 4 wheels. There is also a plug in hybrid model coming which has 297 bhp and offers 62 miles of electric only charging which is quite good. There is also the SQ5 model but this is a different model. If you want to know more about it then let me know in the comment section below and I will make a separate video. Whilst your at it don’t forget to subscribe if you are enjoying this video. The new Audi Q5 starts at £54,010 which isn’t too bad considering its rivals. Right, lets have a look at the interior and see what that is like.
Interior – Design
So, inside the new Audi Q5 and we get the new Audi interior design. With this you get a 3-screen setup. To start with we get a digital instrument cluster with new and improved graphics which look very modern and sleek. Next to this we get a 14.5-inch infotainment system running Android Automotive and it works very well and is easy to use. The only disappointing item is though that the climate controls are on the screen. Finally, the last screen is the optional passenger screen. This is becoming more common, and I would recommend specing this option as you are left with a blank panel, and it would look like there is an item missing. Going back to the driver area you get on the door your light and mirror controls on a touch sensitive panel and your window switches lower down. You also get a new steering wheel too which is modern and good looking but sadly it does have touch sensitive buttons which is a shame. In the centre console we get a lot of piano black material as well as some buttons and your gear selector toggle. Finally, we get some new seats which are sporty and comfortable. Overall then it is a nice place to be and is a definite improvement over the previous generation model. Let’s have a look and see what the rear seats are like.
Practicality
Climbing into the back and you are welcomed with a decent amount of legroom and headroom. It is quite gloomy in the back though without a sunroof so I would recommend having one of those. You do get some reclining seats though as well as heated seats, your own air vent and an arm rest. Overall, then typical Audi in the back. Lets have a look and see what the boot space is like.
Boot Size
Opening the boot to the new Audi Q5 and you are welcomed with a reduction in boot space compared to the previous model. It has gone from 550 litres down to 520 litres which is less than the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC which is a bit of a shame really folding down the rear seats and it does increase to 1,473 litres though.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new Audi Q5. Well, it is still a bit of an odd car really. Now don’t get me wrong it looks really good and has a brilliant interior. It is also practical for a family but there are cars out there that have bigger boots if that’s a concern though. For me though it does feel like that this car hasn’t had much development costs spent on it. For example, using previous generation door handles and taking the interior straight from another Audi. I just feel like Audi should of made it its own giving it a unique take, even more than they did to it. Hopefully next time. It is still a brilliant car though.
