Is the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage better than the old model but also the go to model?

Exterior – Front

So, in terms of design the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage has taken its inspiration from the new DB12. Personally, it looks much better over the older model, and this is thanks to some much bigger headlights that are very similar to the DB12. The grill is also taller than before too taking up the whole front. The side vents are also slightly different than before too making it look like it has gills which is very interesting. Just like on the DB12 all of the air vents are functional so there is no fakery going on here.

Exterior – Side

Moving round to the side and there is no surprise that just like the DB12 there are no changes to talk about apart for some new colour and wheel options. We do get some flush door handles and some big side skirts with some flared wheel arches giving it a menacing GT look which suits the car quite well.

Exterior – Rear

So, moving round to the back of the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage and there is no surprise that there aren’t any changes. we get the same taillight design which sort of mimics the front grill shape which I quite like. The taillights are slim and look very modern, but I think it would look very cool with a light bar connecting them showing off the Aston Martin outline at night. The lower bumper is the same as before, but the badging is new but the same size. Overall, then not too bad. Right, lets have a look and see what is under the bonnet.

Car and engine specs and price

So, just like the DB12 there is only 1 engine option. This is the Mercedes AMG derived 4 Litre twin turbo V8 unit which produces 656 bhp. this is slightly down on the DB12 but 153 bhp more than its previous model. This gives it a 3.5 second 0-62 time and a top speed of 202 bhp. so, power wise then it is very similar to the bigger DB12 which is very good. So, the price of the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage Facelift start at about £165,000 which isn’t that bad considering what you are getting, right, lets have a look at the interior.

Interior – Design

Right, so climbing inside the new Vantage and it has a very similar interior to the new DB12. This means that the old Mercedes setup and the very dated interior and it has been replaced with this sleek and very modern setup. To start with it is very minimalistic and everything has a purpose. We get this flat dashboard design and just below that this metal bar which is actually an air vent. Below this is your infotainment system. Now this infotainment system is an in-house infotainment system which works much better than the Mercedes version. It also has Apple Car Play and Android auto for the first time too. the drive selector button has been replaced with this gear selector toggle though which is a bit of a shame, but Aston Martin has kept quite a few physical buttons which is very good. The centre console does have the same layout as the DB12 but is ever so slightly different. Now, in front of the driver we get a new digital instrument cluster which is easy to see and use and it is integrated a bit better over the DB12 too. We do still get the Mercedes indicator stalks and Mercedes style steering wheel and just like the DB12 it does have a few touch sensitive buttons which I am not a fan with. The overall fit and finish is much better than before which is good, and we also get some new seats which are comfier and more supportive than before. you can now also opt for some carbon bucket seats which again is good. Right, lets have a look at the boot as there are no rear seats in this model.

Boot Size

So, opening the boot to the new V8 Vantage and unlike the DB12 the Vantage gets a hatchback style opening which makes it easier to get items in. boot space is at 350 litres which is decent from its class and is very similar to your usual Vauxhall Astra or your Volkswagen Golf.

Summary

So, in summary then what do I think of the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Well, the overall style on the outside is more relaxed and more GT like than before giving it a more tamed look which some people may not like but I think it suits this car better. It also makes it fit in with its bigger brothers and given the fact it has a lot more power than before it can rival cars above its segment too which is the supercar segment. The interior is also a much better place to be too and overall, it feels a lot more grown up than before and it really pushes the game ahead in this segment. This car will even be relevant still in 20 if not 30 years’ time.
