Does the updates make Volkswagen's small SUV the best yet?
Exterior – Front
So, lets start with the design at the front. To start with we get a whole new front-end design that is much sportier and more premium than before. this is going to be a theme throughout the car so keep watching. We get a new set of LED Matrix headlights with an LED Day Time Running Light in them and connecting them is a light bar. We also get a new grill with a different mesh pattern that looks more modern and premium than before. lower down we get a new central air vent which looks more aggressive, and we get some sporty side vents which house some more LED lights. There is less cladding than before and that just makes it feel more premium.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side and we get a bit less cladding than before and we also now don’t get a fake side vent on the R-line like before. this has now been replaced with the new R logo. We also get some new colour and wheel options too.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back and we get a reshaped design to it. To start with we get some new graphics in the taillights, but they have now been stretched into the boot opening making the car look wider. Gone has the reflective strip too and this has been replaced with a light bar giving this car a more premium look. The boot opening is slightly different with the taillights being slightly wider than before. the bumper is also different with it having less cladding and more body colour again giving this car a more premium look. We also get some fake air vents too which I quite like. Let’s have a look at the engine options that you can have with the new Volkswagen T-Cross
Car and engine specs and price
So, the engine options in the T-Cross are very easy to understand. You can only get petrol engines but they are all very efficient and nippy. Lets start with the 1 litre engines. To start with you can get a 1 litre with 90 bhp. this is mated to a 5 speed manual and it has front wheel drive. 0-62 is delt within 11.2 seconds though which may sound slow. The next option though would be the best option out of them all. This is again a 1 litre engine but it has 110 bhp. again it is front wheel drive but you can either have it with a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed DSG auto. 0-62 is delt within 10 seconds which isn’t that bad. Finally the last engine is a 1.5 litre unit with 145 bhp. this can only be had with a 7 Speed DSG Auto gearbox but 0-62 is reduced to 8.4 seconds which isn’t that bad. The price of the Volkswagen T-Cross facelift starts at £23,965 which isn’t that bad considering its rivals are a lot more than that.
Interior – Design
So, stepping inside the new Volkswagen T-Cross and from first experience it has grown up a lot considering it is only a facelift. the dashboard is completely different with upgraded materials on the dashboard as well as a different dashboard design with a new infotainment surround like what you would find on the T-Roc. It is running the older software, but this does work better than the one you would find in the golf for example. The centre console is the same as before but again the materials are much better than before. we also get the same steering wheel, but it has the newer bigger logo in it and somehow feels more premium. the seats are also the same but again have newer premium materials in it. Overall, it feels like a much more expensive car and if anything feels better than the interior that you would find in the Polo on which it is based. Let’s have a look at the rear seats.
Practicality
So, getting into the rear seats and with me being 6 foot I do get a decent amount of legroom and headroom. You can also fit 3 people in the back too although it will be a bit of a squeeze. Its easier for older people to get in too. Overall, then pretty good. Let’s have a look and see what to boot space is like.
Boot Size
So, opening the boot to the Volkswagen T-Cross you are welcomed with 385 litres of boot space but that is with the false floor in place. If you lower the false floor, then you get 455 litres. If you want more then fold the seats down, then you get 1,281. Really then a useable space and better than some cars that it rivals. I’m looking at you Vauxhall Mokka.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think of the new T-Cross facelift. Well, it feels more than a facelift. With newer and more premium materials it easily moves the T-Cross above its rivals with it feeling much more premium than before, looking much more modern but also being very practical. To be honest, this may be the ultimate small crossover for everyone as it ticks all the boxes.
