The regular Mercedes GLC is a great car, can the coupe version improve on this?
Exterior – Front
Let’s start with the design at the front and just like the normal GLC SUV, the GLC Coupe’s design is more premium and less bulldog than before. To start with the headlights are slimmer and have more of a curve to them to give them a premium look. They are also connected to the grill. The grill is also slightly different as it is more curved and has a new grill design with Mercedes stars on it. Lower down on the bumper we have a respectable air vent, and the side vents are connected giving it an aggressive design which I do like over the old one.
Exterior – Side
Moving round to the side of the GLC Coupe and from the b pillar forward it is the same as the normal GLC. From the B Pillar backwards it is different. We get this nice swoopy coupe style that is much better looking than the old Coupe SUV. Rather than it is looking like an SUV it looks much more like a coupe than before which I like. It makes the car look much more premium than before too.
Exterior – Rear
Moving round to the back and we get a similar design to the rear of the normal version, but this is in a coupe style. It is very similar to the new Mercedes CLE actually. We get these triangular taillights and connecting them is a black bar. We also get a boot lip spoiler, and the number plate has been moved down onto the bumper which makes this car look more like a coupe saloon car which I like. Sadly, though we do get some fake exhausts like all the other Mercedes.
Car and engine specs and price
So, let’s start with the Diesel engines strangely as these will be the most obvious pick. To start with you can get a GLC 220d. this uses a 2-litre turbo diesel unit, and it has 195 bhp but because all the engines are Mild Hybrid just like the normal GLC you will get an extra 21 bhp with it in hybrid mode. 0-62 is delt within 8.1 seconds and it comes with Mercedes 4MATIC system. Next up is the GLC 300d. this uses the same engine, but the power has been upped to 265 bhp with the engine and the mild hybrid again adds 21 bhp to it on top. This reduces the 0-62 time down to 6.4 seconds which is quite good. So, for the petrol models we only get one in the UK, and this is the GLC 300. This uses again a 2-litre turbo petrol unit with 255 bhp and a 21 bhp mild hybrid motor. 0-62 is delt within 6.3 seconds and it is driven by the 4MATIC system. MPG is around 37.7 on average which for this type of car is not that bad. The diesels do get more on average 50 MPG. In the UK we don’t get the plug-in hybrid option which can be seen as a negative but to be honest I see it as a positive. Watch on to find out. The price of the new Mercedes GLC Coupe starts at £59,355.
Interior – Design
So, getting inside we can see that the interior is completely different from the older GLC. This interior has been taken straight out of the C Class. This means we are getting the new 2nd generation MBUX system which is easy to use and has a very clear screen. We also have a very good instrument cluster which again I do like. The steering wheel on the other hand I am not so sure about because of the touch sensitive buttons. The overall feel of the new buttons is a lot more premium than before, and the overall design of the interior is better than the previous GLC and even the rest of the Mercedes range with the older interior design. I also like these seats. They may look odd at first, but they are very comfy, and you could easily do long trips in them. Finally, to help with those long trips you get a Burmester sound system which is very good. Let’s check the back seats out.
Practicality
So, getting into the back legroom is fine but headroom is reduced because of the sloping roof. You can fit 2 6 footers behind each other though, which is great. The middle seat is fine if you are not tall so you can easily travel with 5 in the car. We also get your rear climate control with heated seats and USB C sockets.
Boot Size
So, for boot size you may be wondering how badly it will be affected by the sloping roof. Well, the answer is not much. The normal SUV has 620 litres with the seats up and the coupe has 545 litres with the seats up. This is still useable and is not much of a sacrifice having a coupe version. Now if you could get the plug-in hybrid engine in the UK then this will decrease the boot size to a small 390 litres. Again, I have said it before, but this is poor by Mercedes. If you wanted a Mercedes A Class boot size, you would go for a Mercedes A Class. Mercedes needs to fix this issue of future Plug in Hybrid models. Thankfully though this isn’t an option, and I am happy with that.
Summary
So, in summary then what do I think about this car. Well, the looks are much better than the old GLC coupe and to be honest are better than the normal GLC. It has turned the normal GLC which is a great car into a more premium coupe that stand out from the crowd. If you want a high riding position with plenty of power but in a sleek coupe style, then this may be the car for you.
