Mercedes EQS Review

Is the Electric S Class any good. Read on to find out.

Car and engine specs and price

So the only battery option you can get is the 450+. this has a 107.8 kWh battery that is mated to a 328 BHP motor that is mounted to the rear axle. The 0-62 time is 6.2 seconds which is not as quick as the Plaid Model S from Tesla but I can forgive it because of the 453 mile range and other excellent things that you will see later in this review. There is the new Mercedes EQS 53 AMG coming later but we have no specs of that yet. The price of the Mercedes EQS starts at £99,995. Lets move onto the outside.

Exterior – Front

So the design at the front it is very different from any other normal Saloon. Because this is the EQS it is basically an electric S Class so we will be comparing the styling from the S Class. So just like the S Class we have 3 LED segments. The grill is very smooth and blanked off because it is electric. It is very smooth which means it is slippery and aerodynamic which extends the range of the car. Lower down we have a central air vent and some sporty side vents. Now unlike a normal car we don’t have a normal bonnet. You would think that all of the essential fluids that need to be topped up are in accessible. But they are not. the screen wash is on the left side of the car hidden away. The overall design is very different and to be honest I quite like it but it is not as good as the new EQE that I will be reviewing next year.

Exterior – Side

Along the side we have a very odd shape. To me it looks like a bubble. Near the rear it does not look like a conventional 3 box saloon type shape. Again this is to do with aerodynamics and it takes some time to get used to it and to be honest, I have got used to it but again the EQE looks better. We have pop out door handles which I like and an EQS badge as well as a lot of chrome.

Exterior – Rear

At the back the design is very futuristic. We have an LED light bar and 3D style taillights which I really like. The overall style is very simple and minimalistic and I really like it. The rear view camera is hidden under the Mercedes logo and so is the boot opener. Lower down we have a lower sporty bumper and some side vents.

Interior – Design

now getting into the EQS is like getting into a concept car. Personally this is the best car interior I have ever seen. We have 3 screens, leather and ambient lighting. Lets start with the screens. This is called the hyper screen. It is made up of 3 screens. One 12.3 inch instrument cluster that is 3D and another 12.3 inch for the passenger as well as a 17.7 inch infotainment system. This is the best screen ever as it is an OLED panel, its fast and very clear. The new MBUX is very very easy to use and it it is very intuitive. Navigation is also good as it is clear. Right lets talk about the leather. There is a lot of it and I mean a lot. The center console, seats, arm rest and door cars as well as the dashboard. Everything is leather and if it is not leather it is a very thick carpet and if it is not that it is very soft premium plastic but that has been kept down to a minimum. Storage space is also very very good as you don’t have a center console to take up space. Finally we have fiber optic ambient lighting which means that the ambient lighting is the same brightness all the way round. Finally I love this new steering wheel. It is very luxurious.

Practicality

Sitting in the back there is plenty of legroom that is almost S Class level. Headroom is not though but 6 foots will be more than happy in the back. You can sit 3 in the back quite comfortably but if you only have 2 you can fold down the central rear armrest which has storage space and a tablet in the back to control features of the car. You also get the softest pillows you can get in a car as well as full electric seats and climate control and vents. You could travel for days in the back it is that good.

Boot Size

So the boot size of the Mercedes EQS is 610 litres with the seats up and with the seats down it is 1,770 litres and the best part is that it has a hatchback style rear.

Summary

So in summary then this does beat the rival Tesla Model S on build quality and interior comfort as well as infotainment but it does not go as well as the Tesla Model S in speed. To be honest though this is what I would recommend this because Mercedes have much better customer service.

Exterior 5/5

Interior 5/5

Practicality 5/5

Total 15/15
