Mercedes CLS Facelift Review

Does a facelift improve the CLS?. Read more to find out.

Car and engine specs and price

So lets start with the diesel range. You will be able to get a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder mild hybrid unit which produces 261 BHP. Above this you can get a 3.0 litre straight 6 which develops 325 BHP. There is one petrol engine but that is for the range topping AMG 53 model which will be a separate review. Because the car is still so new the price has not been announced as of yet.

Exterior – Front

So the design at the front has not changed much from the pre facelift. The headlights are the same. The grill also has the same shape, but it has a different mesh pattern. On the new CLS it has the little Mercedes logos like the other new Mercedes. Lower down there is a new grill and some new side vents which at first, look like they don’t suit the car but after a while I have got used to them. The design overall is very stylish and premium.

Exterior – Side

Along the side it looks sleek and sporty with the sloping roof line. We get some nice new sporty wheels that suit the car. They look sporty whilst adding a touch of class to the car. The only thing that I will complain about though is the way the rear window slopes at the back. For me it slopes a bit to low and you can easily catch your head on the outside of the car if you don’t duck enough but that could be because I am a tall person.

Exterior – Rear

At the back the rear design has not changed that much. The overall design at the back of the CLS though is very smart and sporty. You get some nice looking taillights and a nice chrome strip on the lower bumper near the fake exhausts.

Interior – Design

On the inside it is even more premium than before. To start with you get the new Mercedes MBUX system like what is in other Mercedes but not like the S Class and C Class. you also get a new steering wheel which looks very luxurious but is a bit fiddly to use as it is touch sensitive which is annoying. Down below the central clock has been removed and the touch pad has changed. Finally you also get some nice comfy seats. You also get ambient lighting.

Practicality

Sitting in the back we have enough legroom but again not enough headroom because of the sloping roof. Also the design of the roof you can easily hit your head on the side beam because it is big. The seats in the back are comfy and you do get an armrest and some air vents. Finally you have some nice trim paneling on the door as well as some more ambient lighting which is what you would expect.

Boot Size

The boot size of the Mercedes CLS with the seats up is 520 litres but for the petrol models it is 490 litres. The rear seats do split 40 20 40 but that is an option.

Summary

So in summary then the Mercedes CLS is a luxury Coupe saloon type car that could almost be as good as the new S Class. It certainly has the feel of being that premium. If it had other parts from the new S Class like the new MBUX system or rear tablets and captain seats it would be like the S Class. The CLS is basically a cheaper version of the S Class.

Exterior 4.5/5

Interior 5/5

Practicality 3.5/5

Total 13/15
